My amp made an extremely loud pop when turning off

Recommended Posts

One of my four Kenwood L-05M’s made an extremely loud pop when I powered it down with the power button. Why did this happen? None of the other amps did that. I have been trying a new tube pre amp but I don’t see how that’s related? (I’m going to use the mute button on the preamp before turning on and off just in case, but not sure why that would make a difference) I turned it back on and off to test and everything works now, and fortunately music still plays as it should. I have old wiring in my house, and use three prong to two prong adaptors to plug in my power strip and small power conditioner. Any ideas what happened? Recently another amp I had, a Rotel, randomly popped and stopped working here. Not sure if there’s any relationship? My tube pre is buzzing slightly in the left channel, and I’ve had that issue before as well with a Rega Brio I once tried here. Right now I have all four amps plugged into a power strip, along with the preamp into the same strip, which is plugged into a small Furman power conditioner, which then goes to the 3 prong to 2 prong adapter and into the wall. I am turning all the gear on and off with their own power buttons, although for a few days I was using a power strip to turn on all the power amps at once, and also to power them down. I might go back to that for convenience. (I tried plugging everything into the same power strip to fix the buzzing but it didn’t help)

@olds1959special... There's only one solution....Leave them on .... It's perfectly fine to leave solid state gear on all the time. Looks like you have way too many variables to troubleshoot and it can take a while to figure out if you can't reproduce the pop. If you can reproduce the pop then a few occurrences of the pop can potentially end up either damaging your speakers or your amp. Hence, just let the equipment be and don't toggle any switches unnecessarily...

I don’t know what’s up with my system. Today I spent hours trying to diagnose another problem, a super loud buzz coming from one of the amps that I thought was a cable, but then tested the cable and it worked, so I flipped the cables around and that fixed it. I am turning the amps on and off with a power strip now only.  I changed the tubes in my new pre amp and it fixed the hiss. Still a mild hum probably from an old capacitor, but I may live with it for a while. If I don’t touch anything it will probably work right. And just in case, I mute the pre before turning off the amps.

We all know how much you love to play with equipment and that's awesome.  It's a part of this wonderful hobby ,that many partake it.  That said, it can often create many issues that you may never be able to chase down.  Too many variables for sure.  I personally have found that the fewer the connections to worry about (even gassing can be heard with cable connections on some systems).  The other issue you may run into, is that many components just don't play well with others.  This is what may happen with folks who buy the gear of the month (whatever is on the cover of said audio magazine).

When chasing down grounding issues or buzzing,  do you have any boxes you can take out of the system first?  What about just trying 2 of the amps and then rotate them in and out of the system to see if that fixes it.

Years ago, when I can a cassette and reel player in the system, I'd unhook the one I wasn't using or both if I was just using a TT (90% of the time).  I was a DJ and has access to many concerts on reel to reel, hence the reel to reel player, which I liked even more than my records as I didnt' have a top end TT back then (was decent at the time as it was a souped up Rega with the told Grado (met Joe as a kid and he personally gave it to me at my local store.  The owner and he were great friends and he'd often come up to visit and the owner would always tell me to stop by on the way home from Middle school which was so cool).  I've always been blessed in this audio community.   Wow, I haven't thought about that in ages...

I used my Schiit Saga S and straight from the DAC with splitters and no more buzzing. Also no more pops. I’m turning off all my amps with a power strip, not sure if that helps. Also am now using a grounded outlet for my power conditioner. One more thing, I’m trying to carefully adjust the RCA connectors with my multi-tool to get them to fit well. Then when the AI comes back I can firmly plug them in and hope for the best. As much as I love to play with equipment the end goal is have a great system I don’t have to touch or mess with.

One of the best things on this forum is that you can get the best info on what works best with our speakers.

I, for one, have gotten past all the experimenting/trialing. I am lucky that @ctsooner shares a lot of what I hear, so I take his opinions seriously.

So far, I haven't been disappointed.

@olds1959special you might have better luck checking out some local dealers who have a healthy inventory of used equipment. Not only will you get a lot of options but you will also get better reliability and peace of mind that your money isn’t going to waste. If online shopping is your jam then it’s better to buy it from reputable dealers (Audioconnection, The Music Room etc.).

Ebay isn’t worth the hassle… at the end of it all you end up paying more than what the equipment is worth and when you want to sell it, it’s a bloody pain the butt…

I bought my 2Ce Signature II speakers from ebay from a reputable dealer.
They were traded in by the original owner. Got them in the original boxes and with the stands.

It was a great transaction.

I had been looking locally for some time and was coming up dry.

YMMV.
