ctsooner Posted October 31, 2024 Posted October 31, 2024 I'll have a bonus room upstairs (it's the only room that's not on the first floor). It's roughly 21X19. My system will be on the wall that their TV is on (we are going to paint the room a much lighter color). I may even try to put a turntable in again as I just miss using one. I'll try to find a good used one or possibly one with a built in phono stage (not sure any of them are decent). I promise it won't be nearly as cluttered. It will have a leather couch, comfy large upholstered chair and my elliptical behind it all. I was told that I can even use some room treatments in small doses if I want to. I'll listen to any suggestions as you all will have plenty for me 🙂. 2
stratocaster Posted October 31, 2024 Posted October 31, 2024 (edited) Wow.. nice wide room. It's interesting how after spending all these years in this hobby, I evaluate a room by the potential of soundstage, echo, diffraction etc. 😀 Congratulations on this transition. Wish we were closer in geography to help you and be part of the setup process... Edited October 31, 2024 by stratocaster 2
Oregon Posted October 31, 2024 Posted October 31, 2024 Turntable? Tympanic floors? Me too. An upstairs TT can be a bit of a challenge. Please tell us how it goes. Cody

Wish we were closer in geography to help you and be part of the setup process... Thanks guys. My MAJOR weakness in audio is set up. Especially by myself. I have a friend who may come over to help me out though. I can set the speakers up on their granite slabs, but I've never set up the subs (Johnny Rutan did). I[ll have to get the Radio Shack meter and give it a try. I will get it set up and then see if I need any room treatment. I've never used any other than quilts etc... We are choosing the new paint color this afternoon as I'm not doing black. AS for a TT I wonder if it's better to use a 'shelf' type that is attached to the wall or just a stand. I'm still not 100% getting a TT, but man I want to badly. 1
Holmz Posted November 3, 2024 Posted November 3, 2024 Pete - Quilts and plants look just fine. The streamer will also likely be just fine. With a TT you have more to worry about… and it might be better to just enjoy things as they are, until the move is largely over?? 1
BKDad Posted November 3, 2024 Posted November 3, 2024 Personally, I’ve been eying a Consonance Wax Engine table fitted with a Supratrac Blackbird arm and the new DS Audio optical cartridge. Maybe with the new Ayre PX-8 phono front end, though I’d be much more inclined to build my own phono preamp. There’s other things I’d rather do first, though, both in audio world and outside it, so that all is unlikely for now. 1

I had heard about Consonance in the past as they build the Well Tempered tables that I have always loved. Heard they built some Hegel gear in the past also. I'd love to hear one as that price point is outstanding if it sounds as good or better than a comparable WT table.

I've read that the normally supplied Consonance arm may not be as high quality as the rest of the table. But, the Blackbird is way, way above most (note that I said most) everything else out there. I'm not a dealer, manufacturer, importer, sales rep, or even a fully invested consumer, so I'm not attuned to value propositions and all that stuff. Just a hobby for me. So, I only care about what sounds good to me, is reliable, is build by a reputable manufacturer, and if it fits within the budget I set for myself. (By fully invested, I mean that I'm not "into" the business, per se. To me, that's for professionals like Mr. Vandersteen and his peers.) Edited November 3, 2024 by BKDad 1
TomicTime Posted November 4, 2024 Posted November 4, 2024 what Jet size airport is close Pete ??…. gotta admit… i would NOT look forward to anything much colder than Seattle…. i can figure out a way to help w tune even if we just facetime…. who is tearing down your Quattro and importantly has it been done yet ? IF not have then re center each of the 22 EQ potentiometers ! this way they will be at zero sonic disadvantage vs a normal full range speaker… assuredly better but you already knew that 1
ctsooner Posted November 7, 2024 Author Posted November 7, 2024 Thanks Jim. I'm 20 min from Will Rogers in OKC. Great and easy airport. The pool will help during the warm months and even some of the not as warm ones. As for packing, I have the boxes that I'll bring up this weekend. Once I get them in the boxes, the movers will shrink wrap them together and put them on a pallet and band them. he knows they MUST be kept in an upright position. I'll take any other suggestions you can give me though. I have original boxes for everything and that includes my cords and cables. I may take you up on the FT if needed. I'll have the washers, vandershoes and spikes in baggies and labeled so they arent' lost. I may even put them in my glove box and drive them out with me. 😉. I do have an electrical question. I have them putting in a dedicated line for the system and the TV. It's a 20 amp breaker with a 15amp service. 12/2 Romex (is this fine?), 15A tamper resistant receptacle (I'll use my AQ outlet), 20a ARC breaker. He added this note for me: Electric panel does not have any available spare pipes. (Existing one used by pool circuit). Also, electrical panel is covered by 2nd floor. Will have to add a 2g junction box above electrical panel and route circuits though the attic eave space. (Applies to other added circuits as well) If this is good, that's awesome. If I should change anything, I need to get back to him today ... just got his email and posted this here.
TomicTime Posted November 7, 2024 Posted November 7, 2024 The extra box not ideal but probably best to call RV
ctsooner Posted November 7, 2024 Author Posted November 7, 2024 good idea. I'll do that in a few. Thanks
ctsooner Posted November 9, 2024 Author Posted November 9, 2024 Done. so glad I asked him as I forgot to have them put outlets behind the speakers for the Quatro's and amps. He will come back next week to install those and it's only $45 for each one. Said it will take no time at all.
stratocaster Posted November 9, 2024 Posted November 9, 2024 When I got my Quatro’s, it was quite tricky to handle them while removing them out of the box with your hands and palms inadvertently looking to the grills for leverage. Thanks to some extra help, I was able to baby them out of the box. Hopefully you have some help to put them in the boxes without damaging anything. 1
MusicForDave Posted November 9, 2024 Posted November 9, 2024 I pulled a dedicated line to my listening room week before the Kento’s arrived. I used 10/2 Southwire, which has slightly lower resistance than 12/2, but my run distance was likely more than yours (~120’). I also had no available slots in the panel, so I purchased a dual 15A breaker to free up a slot to add the 20A breaker for my room. I put it on the same phase of the panel in case I needed to power my speakers from the room outlets behind them. Also upgraded all the outlets on that wall. Looks like you’re covering those same bases, so your electrical should be solid, and ready for a great setup! 1
