Thats the MS Brad.  Thanks.  Yes, it's Duplisea....  He really knows his stuff.  he can set up large speakers in bedrooms size rooms and make them sound good.  not their best, but decent and that's not easy to do, lol

Hi Bob - I am an Economist who reads the occasional EE textbook for fun. Hopefully this will help.

The Vandersteen high pass filter inserted between the preamp  and poweramp pass all the music signal  to the power amp, the phase correct 6 db per octave slope effects the bass  amplitude of that music signal.  For simplicity lets say 100 hz and below.

You can think of the vandy subwoofer amp ( built in w Quattro and above or sub 2, 3 ) as having a reverse filter to restore the bass curve below 100 hz but also filtering out high frequencies. Since Vandersteen supply the sub amp AND optimize it to drive the subs, no dip switches are required.

Key: Taking the low bass load off the main amplifier improves  everything above 100 hz, the main amp can loaf.

Key: Since the sub interface is speaker level and driven by your main amp, the blend is more cohesive. 

The Dip switches on the box filters ( 5, Kento and 7 ) are necessary to accommodate a variety of amplifiers with different input impedences.

The input impedence of the power amp is the load the box crossover sees and effects the cross over frequency.

Key : The quality of ALL filters is very important, but most important is the filter inserted between amp and preamp. It must be transparent, non resonant, flexible for amplifier choice, and sound great from minute one of music ( dbs ).

The “ unfair advantage “ of M5 or M7 amplifiers is that they put the external box filters inside the amp, the input impedence is known with certainty so no dip switches are needed and the amp highly regulated power supply includes DBS

Key : Amp and Speaker are a relatively high voltage and current system. Designing a benign load loudspeaker AND optimizing the amplifier to deal with it IS a Vandersteen specialty.
