Dual armed TT?

I had a Denon turntable.....just relaying a word of caution.  On the inside periphery of mine, (forgot the model) was what looked like a strobe.  There was  what looked like a tape head that reads that strobe.   If the strobe is scratched, or otherwise damaged, I was told it can't be repaired.

Yeah a Hall effect sensor so it would be the spark plugs not being able to know when to fire… basically like a crankshaft sensor.

Thanks for the heads up.

I ordered a Project anti skate weight and a blank record.
The project arrived Thursday and yesterday I got an envelope with mail that included the anti skate weight from Malaysia.

There is a lower output on the right hand channel.

A bit tangential… but back to cartridges…

With the medium-heavy arm I have, I have  been looking at a few carts.

  • AT ART9XA and XI
  • SoundSmith Zephyr MIMIC star
  • Hana ML
  • and a few others.

I know Jim rates the Hana highly.
Any other recommendations I should try considering in the 1-3 k$ price range?

I like the idea of a SoundSmith, and I am liking the Garrott p77i.
So wanting to plan on where to go to find which carts.

With luck I will need a new arm board soon.
What is the current thinking for arm board material?

I am looking at Panzerholz, or some equivalent?
The current arm board is a plate of alloy (6061) and I have the factory Sota MDF one, but it has a large hole in the wrong place.

Wood, metal, or a sandwich with a constrained layer?

I believe those arms can fit different mounting plates so the effective mass can be anywhere from 12-19g. That’s a pretty good range, and quite a few carts would work depending on the supplied or optional plate.

@Holmz Very nice. Schroeder are neat arms IMO. As a Soundsmith fan, I know Peter Lederman is, and has been, a fan of Frank’s work for a long time. Do you already have a cart that is compatible?

Well the Garrot Bro is gracing the we317. I was thinking a Hana ML, zephyr MIMC star, or maybe an AT ART9XI or something else for a cart.

the second hand arm helps to find a cart…. But I’ll need to make another arm board.

  • 7 months later...

Got a big box from Wisconsin a while ago… hand delivered!

I got the new arm board drilled for the arm on Monday, so will work on the arm mounting… and later cartridge set up.

Then I started disassembling the table:

  • Fitted the new sub chassis springs.
  • Removed motor for the new one to go in.
  • Decided to inspect the bearing, and found that it is shot.
  • Still need to put in the speed sensor, but measured everything up.
  • And also mount the new motor assembly.

So I am pushing forwards with the rest of the hot rodding, and will circle back to the bearing when the emailing back-n-forth with Wisconsin is complete.
I‘ll get it all going and then remove the platter and post it away.
And happily start streaming.

A peek under the kimono of a Sota is about as attractive as the 2C in the raw, with its socks off.

However the arm board drilling is done.
Luckily it came out bang-on 222mm.

I’ll get that black anodised while awaiting the other (bearing) work, as that a is finishing touch, akin to a coat of lip glass.

Thanks for the idea Jim!
And I have some dynamat in the shed...

The bearing was shot.
Going to a MagLev,  so the vertical vibs should be isolated to an extent.

Chunk of the of the sapphire.

The ball bearing is “shot.”
