Rug for living room with hardwood floors

I just added a fairly thick rug to my living room. It seems to have cut down on some of the reflections that were distorting the sound, especially in the bass. How dead/live do you like your listening space?

A thick rug should not have any effect on bass.  It would have an effect on the mids and highs especially floor bounce which will change the balance bass vs. mids/highs.  I think it is very important to have carpet or a substantial rug on the floor between the listener and the speaker.  RV

Maybe what I was hearing was the reduction of higher frequencies causing the bass to sound more present. The sound is more relaxed now. All is good!
