The AI preamp has an outboard PS.
And the ol’ Nag has their power supply.

I would bet a glass of wine that the PS was interacting with the cartridge itself, via magnetic fields.
Usually a toroidal transformer keeps most of the field inside, but some can sneak out.
If it is not toroidal, then more sneaks out.
But it is hard to see without an internal photo of it.
