Summer splurge

Recommended Posts

Well, this was imminent but I didn’t think it would happen so rapidly. After listening to @John Gallup‘s Quatro’s, I started toying with the idea of upgrading to speakers with the carbon tweeter. Since I already had two subs moving up to the Treo’s seem to be the next logical step. After I parted ways with my 2CEs, I let my SoCal Vandersteen posse know that I was looking to move up and the next thing you know, @TomicTime makes one phone call and I get a howling deal on a set of new Quatro’s. Thanks to Tomictime, I leapfrogged  from the 2CE Sig II’s to Quatro CT’s in less time than it takes to dial the 11 band eq on the Quatro’s…

Guess, not a shabby way to ease into summer…

What a nice set up. Very clean.  What veneer is that?  Congrats and a smart move!

It’s the standard black with charcoal colored grilles. They look less dark than the fabric on 2CEs so the room looks less dark. Not to mention the width is smaller than the 1C and the depth utilizes the space much better…

It all starts off similar to the Cialis commercials.  Young couples who can only think about one thing.  They show him taking his pill and her giving him THAT look.  Then they do a fade to the two of them kissing softly on the sofa and then looking forward with a satisfying look.  they then pan to the Vandersteen system which is playing the music that they love and enjoy together.  Close up of the 7 XTRM with matching amps.  The next shot is a pan to the rack.  We clearly see the Digital pieces and the phono pre, but there is a thinner box that just shows a blurred out preamp, but we can't clearly see it... just a tease....

Brad's voice over is next: "What do you do to cure your summertime blues?"

....and cut....

Glad to hear my setup had a positive effect! Are you retaining the subs in this setup?

@John Gallup the subs are disconnected at the moment and serving as amp stands. Don’t think I am going to need them from a sound perspective since the bass from the Quatro’s is more than what my listening space can handle. The knobs at the back of the Quatro’s are at the lowest setting and I haven’t even attempted the eq process yet.  Having said that if you want to hear how things would sound when you fire them up then I can always do that when we get together the next time…Not to mention if you want to try them out with your Quatro’s then you are most welcome…

Thanks for the offer to try out the subs, but I'm quite happy with the bass output of the Quatro's internal subs, as I'm sure you will be when they're dialed in. In a video on this website Richard demonstrates the process; as I recall, it entails using a now-unavailable sound-pressure-level meter from Radio Shack. Ray from Stereo Unlimited did mine when I first got them, and again when I rearranged the room a bit.

@John Gallup I got my hands on the Radio Shack spl meter.. just need a volunteer to sit on the couch to help go through the steps.. it's either going to be you or Rick helping me out since I showed the initial 10 minutes of the video to my son and his enthusiasm to help died as soon as Richard said 'now we are going to go through these steps for the left and right speaker'....🤣

I'm available about any time, as the wife's away until the 19th.

Congratulations @stratocaster with the upgrade. I am in heaven with my Quatro CTs which will most likely be my end game speakers. Some day an upgrade to the M5 amps w/ short cables will complete my audio nirvana. And yes, @TomicTime is such an asset to this community. He has helped so much in the past to get to where I am today. Enjoy those lovely speakers.

I keep trying to think the same thing, but am drawn to the KĒNTO Carbon and wondering if they really sound 2.27 times better. Even made a spreadsheet comparing specs.

The Kento is just an extreme speaker guys. Those who know it, realize that you can’t just create bass like this. There is a reason for his patent on this design. There are numerous ways to recreate true bass and I love how Richard’s achieved it.  Just shows that you need to get rid of all that extra energy. I’d put the kento up again nearly every 100k plus speaker I’ve heard, which are many.

Run them with the M5 amps and Richard’s preamp (very soon) and you have a truly HIGH END system that competes with mega systems. In a normal room, you need 7’s to beat them.

IMO….it is impossible to unhear the magic midrange….if your system can reveal it…as I suspect yours can…..

When I was at Audioconnection putting the Atma Class D's through their paces, Johnny took us to the other room with the Kento's. We were listening through digital (Aurender?), and I do remember how relaxing the sound was. Everything sounded so natural.

Once again, let me hit the lottery- cue up 'Luck be a Lady Tonight'.
